Spring/Summer 2020 Jewelry Trends To Wear Now

Beth BernsteinContributor
ForbesLife
I write about modern and antique fine jewelry.

In my New York Spring Summer 2020 runway coverage, I wrote that the trends we were seeing, we would most likely see again after we headed off the international runways of London, Paris and Milan.

And it happened. Each of the themes I first showed made a strong presence on all of the catwalks. (see New York Fashion Week coverage here). In addition to these trends: juxtaposing color, ultra-large link chains, a bohemian take on antique and vintage jewelry, hoops in every incarnation, modernized pearls, sea and sand inspired jewels and sculptural/tribal updates, there were also four more directions which became evident across the Atlantic.

Just like the trends we saw in New York, these are themes that have been evolving in the jewelry studios and ateliers. And, you don’t have to wait until Spring 2020 to invest in them. They are out there in different price points and styles to purchase and wear now.

Here are four international favorites:

Having A Ball

From the runway to the studios, jewelry designers continue to orbit around three dimensional round shapes. Inspired by everything from planetary spheres, magical inspired crystal balls and sparkly Christmas ornaments, these designs take shape in different interpretations, from lockets to long drop earrings to pendants and charms.

All Choked Up

Chokers are back for Spring 2020. I’m not talking about the fine delicate stackable chokers of a few seasons ago which continue to be worn layering staples. These are statement chokers –hard powerful silhouettes that curve around the neck in gold. They also translate into choker length necklaces that are strong in shape but flexible with multiple dangles accenting the entire piece. It’s a look which says “go bold or go home”.

Going Long

If you prefer a languid sexy long necklace that dips and drapes, there are myriad style lariat, bolo and elongated Y-necklaces that will provide you with the look you want. Many of these can also do double duty and get wrapped around the wrist multiple times.

After seasons of seeing many studs and other styles, we are moving back to finding the one. These are available in sculptural, geometric, dangling and hoop silhouettes. But don’t let that stop your ear party. You can also keep in going on the other lobe.

While it’s important to share that joy and generosity with your loved ones, it’s also an ideal time to reflect on your own milestones and reward your successes. Heading into the season, these three powerful women are sharing their own hallmark moments—and how they commemorate them.

Marigay McKee’s journey started as an executive in luxury retail. Since then, McKee has switched gears, co-founding Fernbrook Capital Management, a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage consumer-facing companies. As her career has evolved, here’s a look at how McKee views her own successes.

With its first round of funding this year, Fernbrook has invested in 30 companies. Looking ahead to 2020, McKee says the venture capital firm is slated for another round of funding as the company seeks out businesses that are taking a tech-centric approach to consumer businesses.

These are just a few of the milestones she’s proud of. “As you progress, you can find the opportunities to do something meaningful, to do something that’s value additive,” McKee says. “Certainly any success I’ve had has stemmed from hard work, diligence and love and passion for what I do.”

For McKee’s 21st birthday, her father gave her a Tiffany & Co. pen. And over the years, the brand—including its classic jewelry—has been central to how she celebrates her own successes and others’.

“Tiffany has always been about celebrating iconic moments, iconic pieces and iconic experiences,” McKee says.

The Tiffany T Pendant can make the perfect gift for honoring big achievements.

McKee’s career is focused on growing Fernbrook and seeking out new, innovative consumer-facing companies. But in her personal life, she looks to her five children as her biggest successes.

“I think when you’re younger, you’re more focused on yourself. And as you get older you focus more on other people,” she says. “Success is seeing my children find success.”

Carmen Rita Wong’s professional endeavors have spanned everything from television host to novelist. Most recently, she’s been focused on investing in female-led companies—while also working on her memoir and being an advocate for women’s reproductive rights. Here’s Wong’s take on how she juggles it all and finds time to reward herself.

Wong celebrates different kinds of milestones across the varied work she does. Recently, for example, she invested in two friends’ companies, which have seen early success. But more broadly, she identifies certain “magical points” looking back on her career.

“Being a woman of color, the world confronts you when you walk out the door,” she says, recalling her time working at a financial news service. During that time, “it became incredibly clear how powerful it can be just to do your job well. [...] We all still gotta pave the way.”

Placing importance on increasing representation, Wong says success to her means feeling proud of her work and finding joy it.

Over the years, Wong says she’s had to learn to take time for herself—whether it’s getting a massage or buying a new jewelry.

“I’ve had to train myself to treat myself,” she says. “I love fashion, for example, so it’s fun and it’s an outlet for me.”

Noting her affinity for “putting together a look,” Wong says she especially loves buying new earrings.

But her go-to for a job well done is a night with her closest friends. “The women around me,” she says,

Giving the Tiffany T True Pave ring can create meaningful moments of celebration.

Wong is immersed in finishing her memoir—which has her equal parts “thrilled and terrified.” In the process, she’s been performing parts of it at a venue in New York City. Paired with her nonprofit work and a daughter whose entering high school, Wong says “it’s a lot,” but her passion for her projects keeps her motivated.

Particularly as a woman of color, Wong has honed in on the importance of telling more diverse stories. “The more storytelling you can do in an authentic, clear way in anything,” she says, “that’s powerful. That’s how you move people, how you move minds.”

Bozoma Saint John’s career in marketing has spanned prominent companies across a range of industries. Currently Chief Marketing Officer at Endeavor, a talent and media agency, Saint John had previous stints at some of the biggest consumer brands. As she navigates her current role, here’s Saint John’s take on staying inspired and rewarding success.

With hallmark moments, both personal and professional, Saint John has always made it a point not to compare herself to others.

“Success to me is not made up of outside influences but really my own feeling of satisfaction and wholeness,” she says. “I’ve learned over the years to rely on my own measure to feel successful.”

While she’s risen in the ranks with her work as a marketing executive, Saint John says her biggest accomplishment is raising her daughter, who’s now in fifth grade.

“With all of the work and moving around and the tragedy that we faced,” she says, alluding to her husband who passed away in 2013. “I feel really, really proud.”

While Saint John is proud of her accomplishments, she’s not one to sit back and reflect on them.

“I feel good in that moment and then I’m on to the next thing,” she says.

The exception, however, is how she commemorates the successes of those close to her. “I celebrate loudly,” Saint John says, noting her affinity for giving gifts. “It’s about giving something more personal, more thoughtful—it doesn’t matter how much it costs.”

Last month, for instance, Saint John gave her mother a luxury car, “which she’s been talking about for as long as I can remember,” for her birthday. The gift stemmed in part from how her mother saved up to help Saint John buy a car many years ago after college.

“That gesture was so generous, I wanted to give that back,” she says. “It feels good to give a gift that was thoughtful. It’s so wonderful, I get rewarded too.”

The Tiffany T Square bracelet is a striking piece to commemorate well-earned milestones.

“I stopped making 5-year plans and 10-year plans a long time ago,” Saint John says. Her process of goal-setting is more fluid—and less about making lists with concrete milestones.

But most importantly, Saint John emphasizes that accomplishments she strives for are both personal and professional.

“I have so many titles in my life. It’s not just CMO. I’m a mom, I’m a friend, I’m a widow, I’m a sister,” she says. “It’s about all those titles. I want to make sure I’m a whole person as opposed to just a title and a job.”

For more than 180 years, Tiffany & Co. has been synonymous with luxury and style. It begins with a founder’s vision of beauty that was brought to life through unassa... Read More

De Beers 2019 “Diamond Insight Report” surveyed same-sex couples in the U.S. and China, which is a first for the sixth annual report (it did not include non-binary couples). The report found that 72% of couples in same-sex couples relationships “view diamonds as important in celebrating life’s special events.”

However, when it comes to design and other materials, anything goes, whether the couple is male or female, according to the report.

“Both genders express their preference for unusual jewelry design,” the report states. “They feel comfortable wearing traditional pieces, which are associated with couples and customs. Their love hey want to find different expressions, it is more understated pieces, while in others it is distinctive branded designs.”

“Yellow and rose gold are back for the color and vivacity they bring to jewelry. For my clients, it’s all about offering choices so they can select what flatters her skin tone and what goes best with her existing pieces,” said Los Angeles based jewelry designer, “We, designers, have to understand that this generation - they don’t buy music albums, they want to curate their own playlists. Choice and individualization is all the more important when investing in something so personal as jewelry.”

“I like yellow gold generally because it is classic and timeless but feels young - my main line is in yellow gold,” a New York based jewelry designer. “That being said, I currently have a loose, rose-cut diamond that would look great set in brushed platinum. It's just a personal for me but also, most brides who want a traditional stone or design gravitate towards the warmer color of gold.”

ANTHONY DEMARCO

Perhaps the engagement and wedding of the decade for the community was the 2019 ceremony and video of their wedding has received more than 3.6 million views on Gorgeous’ extremely popular YouTube channel (nearly 3 million subscribers). Gorgeous woman who earns a living as a model and artist, and is a well-known is a member of the Getty family. They both are social media stars, particularly Gorgeous (who also has 2.2 million Instagram followers and 1.9 million Facebook followers) who is well-spoken and friendly on social media (and in person) fashion, beauty tips, relationships and experiences as a woman.

The wedding at a resort in California was both traditional and a celebration of the couple’s individuality. This followed a storybook proposal in Paris at a castle with “Marry Me” lit up on the outside of the building and fireworks. The ring Getty gave to Gorgeous was traditional, with an antique ring made of white metal with a large diamond center stone and three rows of diamonds. Gorgeous says she cannot reveal the designer’s - it is the type of ring she preferred.

I did not go shopping for it and I did not know what it would look like. I think we did an amazing job. I feel like it embodies our relationship and our love.”

Diamonds were important to Gorgeous as a traditional bond with her family. “My mother had a ring with three diamonds on it. My dad told me that was to symbolize ‘I Love You.’ There is nothing like the way a diamond sparkles. It is a reminder every time it catches your eye to think of that special person. But of course many people may have their own preferences or traditions.”

Gorgeous adds that there is no consensus for the type of ring one would use to express one’s love. For Gorgeous family ties were important, but for others, particularly from the community, she says there are infinite possibilities.

“Personally, I wanted to stay with tradition because my mom was given a ring from my dad,” Gorgeous said. “I have always wanted that for myself but there are of course so many different ways that people can express their love. Some of my friends have shown their love through necklaces or even tattoos. The possibilities are endless.”

The one most observable change among designers who are creating bridal jewels for couples is that yellow and rose gold is being used more. White gold and platinum are the traditional metals for- couples. As Gorgeous noted, couples are not as bound to the ring as a symbol of love as couples. Another thing designers are doing is creating full lines of bridal jewels for couples who want something different and for entire wedding parties.

couples generally, but my clientele, including those who are part of this community, seek to commemorate their relationship with jewelry that feels like them and conforms to their personal vision rather than conforming to a norm,” Fantaci said. “I think people feel free to keep whatever tradition is meaningful to them and discard the rest. For example, not everyone wants two rings (an engagement ring and a wedding band); one couple wants one ring, another wants three diamond rings and another is planning to have two bridal rings but with colored gemstones.”

For Reyter, a diamond ring is the one true way to express one’s love.

“The beautiful thing about love is there is no limit to how it can be felt and expressed. But when it is expressed through jewelry, a ring is the universal symbol of unity. I always picture the exchanging of rings as drawing a circle around your love, to create a protective boundary, where the couple is connected and whole,” Reyter said. “Of course diamonds are preferred. They are as old as time and love, and almost as precious.”

I love skiing and spend a good part of every winter chasing snow around the world. But it is not always an easy sport to pursue, especially at the beginning, as it requires quite a bit of effort, investment and luck. You usually need to travel - often quite a long way - you need a lot of gear, and you need cooperation from Mother Nature, who tends to be fickle.

Until now.

A couple of days ago, Big SNOW American Dream opened just outside New York City, in one of the nation’s most densely populated regions, serving the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state are, as North America’s first indoor, real-snow ski and snowboard center. With an average snow depth of two feet, a constant temperature of 28 degrees, and no worries about wind, rain, fog or whiteout conditions, the complex brings skiing indoors in a much more realistic way than previous attempts using plastic ball bearings or synthetic carpets to simulate powder. It’s open 10-10 daily, but unlike all the other places offering night skiing, it’s not freezing cold.
